What is an Alcohol Interlock?
An Alcohol Interlock is a breath-testing device connected to a vehicle’s ignition. Each time you drive the vehicle, you must take a breath test to prove you have no alcohol in your system.
If alcohol is detected, the vehicle will not start.
Installing an Interlock Device
When dropping off your vehicle to have an Alcohol Interlock installed you’ll need to:
- Fill out the Mandatory Alcohol Interlock Program form
- Choose Smart Start Interlocks as your approved supplier
- Make an appointment for your installation
- Complete training on how to use the Interlock Device
- Take your MAIP Application Form to Service Tasmania.
- Collect your “I” condition licence
- Follow the program

What Do you Need to Do?
- Complete the program application form, call us to make a booking with us for your interlock installation
- The Department of State Growth will receive your application details from us
- Take the program application form, endorsed by Smart Start Interlocks to Service Tasmania and apply for your new licence.
Your New licence will show an ‘I’ condition (requires an alcohol Interlock) on it.
